Introduction

During a field trip to the forest, Mr. Ho Ket (an ethnic Bru Van Kieu in Minh Hoa district, Quang Binh, Vietnam) had a seizure and fell into a forest fire. He suffered severe burns, was bedridden and all activities depended on his family for a whole year. The girl he loved that year is now his wife, and the mother of his two children is the motivation for him to practice walking with a cane. After 3 months of practicing walking, he gradually returned to life on his unhealthy feet, he went carrying water on the ravine, doing all kinds of things to make money.

Irish Aid and AEPD support toilets, clean water, and a cow livelihood model. His family no longer has to go to the ravine to get water, people in the village also have clean water to use all year round. The cow is well cared for by Mr. Ho Ket, she has given birth to 2 more calves. He desires to build a strong and large herd of cows, to improve the family economy, and to give his children a better life. Saving time from fetching water from the hill, Ho Ket started learning rattan/bamboo knitting. The finished products are very sophisticated and sturdy. It is very attractive. Everyone wants to buy immediately when seeing them, because his products are not only necessary items for the family, but also very artistic and environmentally friendly. Ket's products are connected and sold to foreign tourists in the Dong Hoi city.
Bamboo knitting products made by Ho Ket are shown at different events organized by AEPD, such as the 1st Accessible Art Festival in Quang Binh, AEPD workshops and the Talk’s Café.
